The Old Church, Waterloo Road, Blyth, Northumberland
The old Northumberland based church was shut some years back with declining numbers in the congregation. The church stood empty for 5 years until a great local charity took on the church and decided to turn things around. The grade 2* listed church had been left a mess and various work was needed ASAP before Headway arts was able to move in and start using the old church for community and entertainment use.
The Church Heating Specialists were contacted with the challenge to look at how was best to heat the church on the basis the whole floor will be removed along with the fixed pews to make the old worship area a large dance floor. The gallery area would remain so it was important to heat these areas for the public to watch any performances. The old church had a large church hall extension and this was being run from to smaller boilers however the main church boiler was in an old boiler room damaged by rising water.
The design and agreement was done to install a new wall hung condensing boiler power full enough to heat the whole church and hall when required. A 3 zone heating system was installed and the main performance area was first to be done. All the old cast iron pipes was removed and new 2” steal pipes installed. These was connected to a newly installed fin coil system and wooden runner track allowing the heat to rise. New radiators was installed along the side walls and changing areas in the old Vestry rooms. The work was all done in just 5 days with 7 specialist church heating engineers on site working 15 hour days. It was extremely important to get the installation done soon as possible so the church could be ready for its first performance.
Head of Headways arts Paul – “ I cant believe the speed of your guys to install such a system that works amazingly well in just 5 days. I’m sure your engineers will sleep all weekend after the shift they put in this week. A big thanks to you all its been a pleasure from start to finish”
