St Michael and All Angels Church in Tatenhill, Burton upon Trent is facing closure, but it’s not going down without a fight, despite services beginning to wind down already.
The main problem is the dwindling congregation numbers, which has sparked major concert from Bishop of Stafford, Reverend Geoff Annas, and The Venerable Matthew Parker, Archdeacon of Stoke who have made numerous visits, and issued a warning last year. They have concluded that not enough has been done since the warning to attract more worshippers.
Reverend Andrew Ridley who is in charge of the village church, blames the lack of church heating for the low numbers, which is a major consideration for visitors, especially in winter, when the church can become unbearably cold. These freezing conditions often mean that during the winter months, worshippers travel elsewhere, and unfortunately they don’t come back when the weather improves.
The reverend is currently in talks with the council, and is doing everything he can to prevent the imminent closure, and applying for a church heating grant should be a top priority.
