Close to the boarder of Wales, Chester is the largest city in Cheshire, with a population of over 300,000.  The Cathedral and the Town Hall are the most prominent buildings in the city.  Previously known as the Church of St. Werburgh’s Abbey, the cathedral dates back to the Norman era, and has had many additions made as well as a major renovation in the 1900s.  In 1975 a new tower was built, and there are beautifully carved canopies of the choir stalls which are regarded as the finest in the UK.  St. John’s church is the oldest in the city, and actually used to be the Cathedral.
