Durham is the county city of Durham, and lies in the North East of England, near Newcastle, Sunderland and Darlington.  Sitting on the River Wear, the city is dominated by Durham Cathedral, which overlooks the breathtaking scenery.  In 1650 the Cathedral was actually used as a prison to hold Scottish prisoners, the etchings they left behind can still be seen in the stonework to this day.
