St Mary’s church in Lowgate is the oldest of it’s kind in Hull, and an appeal to raise £1.6m has been launched, which will help secure the future of the church.
St Mary The Virgin church in Lowgate, right in the city centre was built in the 1300’s, but is at a critical juncture with regards to it’s future. Vital restoration work is required, or the church will face closure. It was 150 years since it’s last restoration, and with major work required such as the flooring, and the all but redundant church heating system, it is down to the work of the local fund-raising team to find the money to complete the huge list of work. The task falls in the hands of the Friends of St Mary’s group.
The church is used and loved by all ends of the community, from business meetings to private functions, as well as local performers including musicians, poets and artists. The creative space is renowned in Hull, and the acoustics of the main hall are a real crowd pleaser.
The current church heating system dates back to the Victorian era, and remarkably it actually still works, although not very well. The tiny radiators are so small and the system is so dreadfully inefficient that it is usually just kept turned off.
The church desperately need to raise the funds, as they are a strong pillar of the community, catering for both the rich and poor. A soup kitchen is set up three times a week for the homeless, and they even allow the homeless to shelter in the grounds at night.
