St John’s church in the west end of Edinburgh is ready for final it’s stage of the enormous £3.4m makeover this summer. The initial stages of the development for the 200-year-old building began back in 2012 after 10 years in planning, starting with the replacement of the church heating system, with the next phase being a full refresh as it nears its 200-year anniversary.
Originally built in 1818 the building has seen lot of changes over the years, with it’s main focus to serve the community around it. An increased amount of space for community groups and events, as well as upgrading the existing facilities for the congregation are planned.
The huge project will see lots more work too, including a new church hall, and the underneath of the church has already been excavated with a lot of different rooms and meeting spaces added.
After four years of congregational pledges and fundraising events, the church has reached it’s £3.4m target, Project Manager Charlotte Bray said “Everybody in the congregation has been incredibly generous in terms of legacies and regular giving,”
